Outside of the commercial icemaker field there are only
five current icemaker designs, with the crescent style dominating the
market. Below they are listed by popularity along with a
description:
1. Whirlpool Crescent Type (Modular Design)
-identified by a gray plastic end under the cover plate.
2. Whirlpool Crescent Type (Brass Design)
-identified by a brass covered metal end under the cover plate.
3. GE Pop-up
-identified by small cylindrical ice cubes and pop-up ejection.
4. Whirlpool Twist-tray
-identified by a metal frame surrounding the plastic mold. (Used in the early 80's)
5. Amana Twist-tray
-identified by a wide open plastic mold with the drive head in the back.
6. Frigidaire Twist-tray
-identified by a top fill from the ceiling of the
freezer. Nearly all of these are on the junk heap and
belong there. The best advice is to either forget the
icemaker or buy a new refrigerator.
NOTE: Nearly all new refrigerators now utilize the modular Whirlpool design.
