Icemaker Diagnostics

An icemaker is a very complicated, interesting device that has become a common household item. Homeowners have become dependent on icemakers and are willing to spend a lot of money to keep them in repair.

The following flow chart covers icemakers found in the freezer compartment of a typical domestic refrigerator. Occasionally, other types will be encountered. Several companies manufacture free standing icemakers, designed to fit under a counter. They are 12-16" wide and include an independent refrigeration unit. Normally, they are found in a separate bar area. Most of these free-standing units operate as miniature freezers and use the same logic covered in the flowchart. A few, such as the Scottsman grid cutting design, are totally different and are covered separately at the end of Manual 9: Icemakers.
