Replacing a GE Refrigerator Door Hinge and Cam

Uncle Harry Trick of the Trade A bad hinge cam causes the door to hang open an inch or clunk as it closes. To replace a bad hinge cam the door must be removed. It is not necessary to remove all of the food from the door. Lay it out carefully as shown and all the jars etc., except for unsealed liquids, will slide against the door.
Damaged hinge and cam Usually the lower hinge and cam are OK and can be reused. However, in this example a new hinge is also needed.
Damage and missing upper cam Here the upper cam is ground away to nothing.
New upper cam being installed This view shows the upper cam partially installed.
New lower hinge and cam Here is a new lower hinge and cam installed. It is now time to lift up the door and place it on the hinge. The last step is installing the upper hinge and aligning the door.
